Esta es la primera vez que una serie animada de súper héroes será protagonizada por un personaje homosexual. El personaje principal es The Ray, líder de los Freedom Fighters y que desde su creación en 1992 es homosexual.

Inspirado en la versión de Grant Morrison, Raymond Terril, un reportero que descubrió un plan gubernamental para utilizar la luz como un arma, fue expuesto a una explosión que le dio el poder de controlar y manipular la luz. Gracias a esto, fue reclutado por el Tío Sam para formar parte de los Freedom Fighters.
